Friden 1166
The Friden 1166 is a low cost machine derived from Friden's 1160 calculators. It was the last of the 116x-series of calculators made in house, with production being taken over by other calculator manufactures including Hitachi. There were around 45,000 Friden 1166s made. They and the earlier 116x models share a rather unique acoustic delay line element as the main storage memory, and a small cathode ray tube as the main display.
Our unit, serial #16180, is unfortunately in a very sorry state having been stored in slightly damp conditions for many years before it came into the Soemtron fold. It has also been dropped at some point in its life, as can bee seen in the top left of the main photo where some of the metalwork is bent, slightly lower down you can see that the PSU board is bowed outwards. The outer aluminium cover is very corroded in places so it will need re-painting. Interlocking elements of the keyboard switching is also broken.
Our aim is to restore this unit to full operation - a future project !!
